Counsellors in various Government Schools have been getting large number of drug abuse cases, which is giving them a hard time.
As per these counselors, the students in government schools are struggling in their efforts to get rid of drug addiction. The counselors say that this is due to bad company and also negligence of the parents.
Nidhi Pandit, a counselor at the Government High School in sector 35 and Government High School sector 34 claimed that she gets about 5 cases on an average every month where students are suffering with drug addiction.
“I deal with many cases where students consult me to find a way to avoid their urge for drugs. They were so depressed and seemed aware of the root cause of their trouble but seemed helpless,” said Pandit.
“These students reside in areas where drugs are easily available and they have grown watching their near and dear ones consume these,” Pandit added.
“I personally had to arrange sessions with these children but as I have to look after two schools, it becomes difficult for me to stay touch constantly.
At times “I get a shock listening to their stories and by seeing the level of their addiction,” she added.
Prabhjot Kaur, counselor of Government Senior Secondary School, Behlana and Government High School, Hallomajra also said that parent’s ignorance was one of the major reasons behind the students indulging in such activities.
“Drug abuse cases are common in government schools and this is largely because of the society and the environment in which these children grow up. Moreover, parents these days don’t have time for their kids and thus in order to deal with the depression, these children opt for the wrong means and indulge themselves in drugs or alcohol, which is very dangerous for them,” said Kaur.

Refuting to disclose the name, a lady counselor from a government school said that students are also becoming the victim of sex abuse at home, due to which they lose their confidence completely.
“I was shocked to come across a case in which a girl was being sexually abused at home by one of the male member of the family. She used to stay quiet in the class and did not respond to the topics taught to her in the classroom.The girl was referred to me and I was shocked by her revelation. I had to call her parents and take them in confidence that they would take care of their daughter,” she added.
