The Election Commission on Friday allowed the Punjab government to consider on compassionate grounds various pending parole applications submitted since the imposition of the model code of conduct in the state.

A decision in this regard was taken by the commission on a letter sent by the state chief electoral officer (CEO), pointing out that a large number of parole applications were lying pending since the code came into effect (in late December), an official spokesperson said.

Now, the state government can entertain the applications at its own level without seeking permission from the CEO.

As per the code, convicts in a poll-bound state are not given parole till the election results are out.
