The case pertained to a sale of an eight Kanal land to the trust running the Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET), Bhaddal, through forgery.

Judicial Magistrate(first class) Harsimrat Singh sentenced former tehsildar of Rupnagar Ramesh Verma, Jasbir Singh, Hakam Singh, Surjit Singh, Mewa Singh and Sucha Singh and also imposed a fine of `40,000 on each of them.

The case dates back to 2001, when, after the death of Nanak Chand, the owner of the land in Sarhali (Mianpur) village, his family had given ASI Bachan Das the power of attorney for the land.

However, Joginderpal Singh, who was also an accused in the case but died while the case was being tried, had sold the land to Kandi Friends Educational Trust — which runs IET Bhaddal — by forging documents of the land.

Ramesh Verma and patwari, Jasbir Singh, got mutation of the land done in revenue records.
