Arya Samaj leader Swami Agnivesh, who is being tried for allegedly hurting the religious sentiments of Hindus by making a "comment" on the Amarnath Yatra in May last year, was granted anticipatory bail by the Punjab and Haryana high court on Thursday.
It has been alleged that Agnivesh, last year, had said that he did not "understand those who go for the Yatra". "It is a religious deception. I do not believe in this type of religion," Agnivesh had said, social activist Praveen Tayal has alleged in a police complaint registered at Hansi, Haryana, on May 23, 2011.
The bail was granted after a petition moved by Agnivesh came up for hearing before a bench headed by Justice Paramjeet Singh. Haryana government had earlier cleared its decision to the high court that it had declined to give prosecution sanction against Agnivesh.
The Hansi sub divisional judicial magistrate on September 19, 2011 had also initiated proceedings to declare Agnivesh as proclaimed offender when the state police failed to produce him before the court.
Following this, Agnivesh had approached the high court, seeking anticipatory bail on which he was granted interim bail on September 30 last year with the directions to join the investigations and not to leave the country without the court's permission.
