Amandeep Kaur, a superintendent of police (SP) who was formerly with the vigilance bureau in Ludhiana, moved the Punjab and Haryana high court on Friday, seeking anticipatory bail in an FIR registered in the fake vigilance trap case.
The fake trap had led to the arrest and subsequent suicide of excise and taxation officer (ETO) Ranjit Singh in April last year. The petition came up for hearing before the bench headed by justice KC Puri, which issued a notice of motion to the Punjab government for October 5.
HT (February 16) was the first to report that a high-level probe had exposed the trap as fake and yet the government was not taking any action against the erring cops and traders. After the HT story, Amandeep was transferred out of the vigilance bureau.
The FIR was registered on August 18 against Amandeep Kaur, head constable Harminder Singh, traders Rajinder Singh and Rajiv Sood, and driver Paramjit Singh under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including 120-B (criminal conspiracy) and 306 (abetment of suicide), and sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act at Phase 1 police station, SAS Nagar, on court directions.
The petitioner submitted that there was no evidence to substantiate the allegations against her regarding the receipt of Rs 8 lakh by Vipan Kansal, Vijay Ghai and Jatinderpal Singh on March 31, 2011, on her behalf and the demand of Rs 50 lakh by Harminder Singh, her reader, on April 22, 2011, in the presence of Kansal and Ghai.
