Taking a serious view of petitioners filing frivolous public interest litigations (PILs) that appeared more of "private/personal interest litigations", the Punjab and Haryana high court has ordered that such petitions would not be entertained.
The division bench headed by chief justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul observed while dismissing a PIL on Friday that there were petitioners who filed PILs just on the basis of newspaper reports without doing any research on their own. The court said the petitioners did not even try to approach the authorities concerned for highlighting their issues and came directly to the courts.
The chief justice also issued directions to the high court registry not to entertain such PILs that did not fulfil the requirement as per PIL rules and the Supreme Court judgment. The court stated that in many instances, it had been observed that just for the sake of publicity, some litigants were filing PILs where they were nowhere concerned, ultimately wasting the court's valuable time.
The directions came while dismissing a PIL filed by Ajaib Singh, challenging illegal encroachments in the Sunam grain market in Sangrur district. The court observed that the petitioner did not even bother to approach the authorities and directly came to the court.
