Police on Wednesday busted a gang operating from the city involved in selling duplicate products through a shopping portal.
Those arrested have been identified as Ashish Sobti alias Ashu, a resident of SAS Nagar, and Karan Vir Singh, a resident of Patiala.
Police received a tip-off on September 23 that operators of website www.richkart.com are cheating people by selling duplicate products of branded companies such as Rolex, Rado and Tissot.
The accused used to upload original photographs of branded watches on their website to attract customers but later deliver the duplicate products to them.
Acting upon the information, a team of crime branch headed by sub-inspector Ashok Kumar laid a trap near the railway bridge, Ram Darbar, and succeeded in apprehending accused Ashish Sobti and Karan Vir Singh. Two bags of duplicate watches of different brands were recovered from them.
During interrogation, they disclosed that they were going to Ram Darbar, Phase 2, Chandigarh, for packing of watches. A total of 14 duplicate Rolex, three Omega, two Rado watches and a Tissot watch were recovered from their possession.
Upon further interrogation, it was established that the accused Ashish is owner of the website and Karanvir Singh is a web designer who used to upload photos of different products on their website and manage everything. Both accused were produced in the court.
