"This Valentine’s day gift your love a beautiful book and not a flower,” said Irshad Kamil, an Indian lyricist who has written songs for Bollywood films including Jab We Met, Chameli, Love Aaj Kal, Rockstar, Aashiqui 2 and Raanjhnaa. The lyricist was in the city to release his new book, ‘Ek Maheena Nazmon Ka’ which is a collection of his poems ( 31 nazams).
Addressing the audience at the Panjab University, Chandigarh, Kamil encouraged the younsters to take to writing. Remembering his student days at the university, he shared that he missed the Student Centre, in particular. Though the lyricist has made his mark in Bollywood, he is quite down-to-earth and feels lucky to have admirers around him. “Mohobbat kisi kisi ko aur kabhi kabhi hi milti hai aur mai khushnaseeb hoon,” Kamil said.
”There is a certain age when one gets to know what one really wants to do with life. It was during my teenage period when I realised, I can write well. Finally, I thought of making it my profession,” he added.
Encouraging the youth to not give up on their dreams, he said, “There is nothing like struggle. It depends on the way you look at life.” Talking about his ability to connect with people through his songs, he said it was because whatever he wrote, came from within.
There is a common myth that lyricists are not able to perform their best after being confined to the situation of the movie and rythym. “If you are a professional, you have to do what your profession demands. The question is how much effort you put in. Writing for movies is my profession and writing for my own self is my need. And I fulfill both,” he clarified.
