Following the Punjab and Haryana High Court’s recent move to strike down the eligibility criteria that mandates Class 12 from a Chandigarh school of MBBS admissions under the UT pool, Government Medical College and Hospital (GHCH), Sector 32, Chandigarh, will soon move the high court to challenge the judgment before the division bench.
Director-principal of the college, Dr Atul Sachdeva, said the judgment was against the admission criteria of the college. He said, “We have asked our lawyer to move the review petition soon. We are hopeful that the court will understand and maintain the status quo over the current admission criteria.”
On September 16, the single bench of the high court quashed the UT administration’s regulations, which mandatory it for candidates (even bona fide city residents) to clear class 12 exams from a Chandigarh school to be eligible for admissions to 85% MBBS seats reserved for the Chandigarh pool at GMCH-32.
As reported by HT on Saturday, the single bench’s decision is likely to affect students from other cities, who have secured admissions to schools in Chandigarh only to meet the eligibility norms. A senior official of the UT law department said in the event of an unfavourable ruling by the division bench, the administration would have to amend its eligibility criteria.
One of the affected parents, Sanjeev Gupta, a resident of Dera Bassi, said, “We welcome the college’s decision to file the review petition before the division bench because any change in the existing policy will jeopardise the careers of students.”
