On the occasion of the National Voters' Day, governor Kaptan Singh Solanki urged school children to enroll themselves in the electoral roll when they turn 18 years old.
The governor was inaugurating a function, themed 'easy registration-easy correction', during a state-level programme organized at Dyal Singh College in Karnal on Sunday.
During the event, students, who have yet to attain the minimum age for voting rights, took a pledge to ensure other students enrolled themselves in the electoral list as well.
Speaking on the occasion, the governor said the younger generation should know the significance of casting vote. "All people eligible for voting should consider it their democratic right and exercise their franchise without fail to ensure hundred percent polling," he said.
Solanki lauded the role of the Haryana chief electoral office for launching intense voter awareness drives that, he said, led to improvement in the last assembly election.
"While Lok Sabha elections in Haryana witnessed 72% polling, in the Vidhan Sabha the figure was pegged at 77%. Voting should be taken as an integral duty for the betterment of the society and all stakeholders should take awareness as their responsibility to ensure 100% voting in the coming years," he said.
Chief electoral officer Shrikant Walgad said every year National Voters' Day was observed on 25th January, a practice that was initiated in 2011 to commemorate the foundation day of the election commission of India. He said that the EC's objective behind the observance was to increase enrolment of voters, especially of the newly eligible ones.
There are 5.65 lakh voters in the age group of 18 to 29 years, including 4.14 lakh new voters have got themselves registered.

In Sirsa, a cultural programme was held at CMK national girls' PG College, which was presided over by deputy commissioner Sirsa, Nikhil Gajraj.
Greeting the people who recently registered themselves as voters, Gajraj said, "Right of vote is a tremendous power provided to us without any discrimination of caste, religion or community."
He said, total number of the voters in Sirsa has reached up to 8,70,690, out of which, he said, 15,800 voters are in the age group of 18 to 19 years.
