Gurdwara agrees to raze illegal structure

"Whatever transpired on January 31 and after that was wrong. We are ready to demolish the illegal structures provided the administration assures us that the cases will be withdrawn. This decision was taken at a meeting held today and has been forwarded to the aministration," said the legal adviser of the gurdwara management, Ramdeep Pratap Singh.

He said a committee was constituted by the gurdwara management comprising councillor Jagjit Singh Kang, former mayor Harjinder Kaur, former MP Harmohan Dhawan, gurdwara management secretary Ranjit Singh and Gurnam Singh Sidhu. This committee called on UT administration officials and offered to resolve the issue amicably.

The gurdwara committee, however, clarified that they would go ahead with the decision only when the administration withdraws the criminal cases filed against gurdwara chairman Swaroop Singh and many other devotees.

The incident took place when the demolition squad, accompanied by around 20 cops, reached the 'sarai' to remove an illegal structure from the first floor, which was reportedly erected in violation of building bylaws.
