The union ministry of coal has allocated the Kalyanpur-Badalpara coal block in Jharkhand to Haryana Power Generation Corporation Limited (HPGCL).
The coal block having an estimated reserve of about 102 million tonne has been allocated to Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. It is spread over about 6 sq km.
State power minister Capt Ajay Singh Yadav said the allocation of the coal block was a major boost to the power generation sector in Haryana. The minister said the coal would be used for partially meeting the fuel requirement of the proposed super critical 660-MW thermal generating unit in Yamunanagar whose progress was held up for the want of coal linkage. "Now with the allocation of the new coal block, the project can take off and its commissioning can be expected in the 13th plan period," the power minister said.
Another coal block at Mara-II Mahan in Madhya Pradesh, having reserves of about 950 million tonne is already being developed by Haryana with the Delhi government. Capt Yadav said the ministry had allocated 14 coal blocks for the power sector located in six host states on the recommendation of the inter-ministerial committee (IMC) after deliberations at every stage with the applicant state government, host states where the coal blocks are located, ministry of power and central electricity authority.
He said about 15 states and six central public sector undertakings (PSUs) had been allocated coal blocks. Some of the coal blocks, because of their size, had to be given to more than one state. Haryana's application was shortlisted by the ministry after scrutinising 318 applications received by them from all over the country.
