The PPOs will be located in the superintendent of police's office at the district level, said Sumita Misra, director general, women and child development department.

She said PPOs would work to ensure effective implementation of the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005, and Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006.

During 2012-13 (up to December 2012), PPOs dealt with 5,624 complaints of domestic violence while 1,532 domestic incident reports were recorded by PPOs, Misra said.

In 519 complaints, PPOs filed applications in courts on behalf of the victims. In 380 complaints, PPOs conducted enquiries on court orders, she said.

During the same period, PPOs dealt with 186 complaints of child marriage and 27 such incidents were prevented with injunction, she said.

The home department had also provided one male constable and one female constable for their assistance, she said.

Twenty four organisations are currently registered as service providers under Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005.

Tata institute of social sciences in Mumbai has been engaged for training and capacity building of PPOs.
