Taking a serious view of the chaos created by vehicles ferrying school students, the Punjab and Haryana high court has directed the Chandigarh administration to ask schools to adopt some suitable measures to avoid such a situation.
Acting on a public interest litigation, the court told the UT senior standing counsel that even students could be persuaded to stop coming to school in private vehicles. It said that if students come in school buses, this would help reduce unnecessary traffic jams outside schools.
On this, the UT's standing counsel told the court that the administration was holding meetings with schools and would come out with a solution soon.
A resident of SAS Nagar, Inderpreet Singh Kohli, had approached the high court, highlighting that traffic chaos had become a daily feature in and around Sector 26, where eight educational institutions are located.
The petitioner has sought directions to the authorities concerned to make a provision for proper parking lots in and around the educational institutions by utilising the vacant spaces.
"At least 6,000 school students and 2,000 college students studying in Sector 26 come to the sector almost at the same time within a span of 30 minutes. Besides, there are a number of people visiting the Mahatma Gandhi institute, polytechnic institute and the temple in the area," the petitioner told the court, pointing out that the rush was resulting in long traffic jams everyday.
