Taking up a public interest litigation filed by a mathematics teacher from Mansa seeking directions to the Punjab School Education Board to suitably compensate the Class-12 students who had taken the mathematics paper this year in March, as the question paper had numerous mistakes, the Punjab and Haryana high court has sought the Punjab government's reply.
The division bench comprising justices Rakesh Kumar Jain and Paramjeet Singh issued notice of motion to the Punjab government as well as the board for July 8.
The petitioner, RK Goyal, informed the court that he had found that many questions in the paper had been wrongly framed and due to such errors apparent in some of the questions, the nature of the question itself changed.
The petitioner said there were many questions which were grammatically incorrect that confused the students. By such questions, the students got confused and did not even know that the attempt had been incorrectly made on a wrong premise, he submitted. This eventually led to marking of the answer as wrong at the stage of checking, resulting in students' loss.
He said he had been pointing out mistakes in question papers as well as textbooks since 2010 but the board did not take action. It was informed that about the discrepancies in textbooks he had also written to the National Council of Education, Research and Training.
