Healthier chances at GMCH-32 for aspiring docs

The Medical Council of India (MCI) has okayed 50 more MBBS seats for Chandigarh's only undergraduate medical college, GMCH-32, taking the number to 100. Students from the city have 85% quota in these seats.

This was a mere formality as no inspection by the MCI was required; on July 8, the union ministry of health had given one-time exemption from inspection to colleges for 50 more seats. Colleges with standing of over 10 years were eligible with the aim to bring down the doctor-patient ratio in India to 1:1,000 from the present 1:2,000.

However, this increase is for this session only. The proposal of GMCH-32 to permanently increase its MBBS intake to 100 is likely to get the nod next year only after an MCI inspection.
