Haryana chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda on Friday said that khaps (community councils) were a part of our "sanskriti" (culture).

The chief minister was responding to a question pertaining to the view of union finance minister P Chidambaram, who had recently termed khap panchayats as a retrograde organisation and said they were not part of India's culture.

Though Hooda stayed clear of commenting on what Chidambaram had said, he equated the role of khaps with that of NGOs and residents welfare associations.
