INLD’s Nuh candidate Zakir Hussain allegedly rode an elephant during his nomination process on Friday, violating the election code of conduct.
The election commission (EC) issued the leader a notice after an animal rights activist alleged that Hussain rode on an elephant to the returning officer’s office to file his nomination.
The EC has issued an advisory to all political parties and asked them not to violate the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, and the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.
According to complainant Abhishek Kadian, member of the State Board for Wildlife ( Haryana gover nment), no permission was sought by the chief wildlife warden to ride the elephant.
The animal rights activists, now, demand Hussain’s candidature cancelled and an FIR lodged immediately.
Kadian, who is associated with several animal rights organizations, has also initiated an online signature petition in this regard. The petition states that the animal was badly abused and could have damaged public property and endangered lives.
The petition has been addressed to the chief election commissioner of India, wildlife crime control bureau, chief wildlife warden of Haryana, Haryana police, animal welfare board of India, deputy commissioner (Nuh), inspector general of wildlife and police station (Nuh).
The petition also demands that the elephant abuser custodian be booked after confiscating the elephant.
It further requests that the chief wildlife warden should take the matter of cancellation of male elephant ownership and ensure that the animal is rescued and rehabilitated immediately.

Hussain, who could not be contacted despite several attempts, has been asked to respond within two days.
