Head constable Gurmeet Singh, 42, fired a gunshot in the air from his person revolver in self-defence, but the youths overpowered him. He received serious injuries on the head and was rushed to the civil hospital.

Gurmeet's daughter, a Class 11 medical student, was coming out of a coaching centre with her father when the incident took place.

"My daughter had complained that a boy, son of a Model Town-based property dealer, was stalking her for the past three-four days while on her way to the tuition class. I had gone to file a complaint at the coaching centre on Saturday," said Gurmeet.

He said: "The youth who used to stalk my daughter was standing outside the coaching centre and when I questioned him, he started arguing with me. He also called his father and friends and alleged that I had hit him."

Assistant deputy commissioner of police (ADCP-II) Harpreet Singh Mander, assistant commissioner of police (ACP), Model Town, BIS Kahlon and station house officer (SHO) Nirmal Singh reached the spot and started investigations.

"We will record the victim's statement before lodging a first information report," said the ADCP.
