Are three speed monitoring radars enough to curb the menace of rash driving in the entire SAS Nagar district? Though this number speaks itself, the death of two cyclists by a speeding car recently has raised several questions over the safety of pedestrians or cyclists in the city.
According to the information, there are only three speed radars, and a few check posts are laid in the city to keep check on speeding vehicles. Police say owing to inadequate staff and equipment, these check posts are set up in shifts.
In the recent accident - in which a speeding car had rammed into two separate cyclists near Jagatpura Colony, resulting in their death - the speed limit was 40 to 50km per hour, but expert reveal the car driver might be driving at the speed of around 100km per hour.
Ajit Singh, a mechanical expert appointed by the Phase-11 police station, said, “The damages in the car clearly show the accused was driving at around 90-100km per hour speed.” The rash speeding has taken many more lives in the recent past too but police seem to have learnt no lesson.
Notably, in Chandigarh, there are over 16 speed monitoring radars installed in different parts of the city. Expressing there was no need to install more speed radars, senior superintendent of police Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said, “We are using these to keep a check on rash driving in three highways. Also, cops are concentrating more on traffic duties.”
