Justice Gogoi elevated to Supreme Court

Punjab and Haryana high court chief justice Ranjan Gogoi was today elevated as a judge of the Supreme Court.

Punjab and Haryana high court chief justice Ranjan Gogoi was today elevated as a judge of the Supreme Court.

A Law Ministry statement said Justice Gogoi (57) has been appointed judge of the apex court from the day he assumes his charge.

With the appointment of Justice Gogoi, the strength of the Supreme Court judges has gone up to 27 against the approved strength of 31.

Earlier this month, Justice Fakir Muhammad Ibrahim Kalifulla was elevated to the apex court.
Justice Gogoi had joined the Bar in 1978 and practiced mainly in the Guwahati High Court.

He was appointed as a permanent judge of the Guwahati high court in February 2001. He was transferred to Punjab and Haryana high court in September 2010 and elevated as chief justice in February 2011.
