Prime Minister Narendra Modi may have bowed before the notorious Haryana khaps to win over Jats in the assembly elections, but the caste councils remain loyal to former chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, who belongs to the rival Congress.
The representatives of 20 khaps and members of Jat Arakashan Sangrash Samiti fighting for Jat reservation on Wednesday marched to the house of Rohtak parliamentarian Deepender Singh Hooda at 9, Pandit Pant Marg here, where the ex-CM now stays, to reinforce their support to him even though his government has been voted out. Sarv Khap Sarv Mahapanchayat coordinator Inder Singh Hooda, who led the delegation, said the objective of meeting Garhi Sampla Kiloi legislator and his MP son was to instill confidence in the leaders.
Led by Bhupinder Singh Hooda, the Congress had gone for a third term in Haryana but finished a poor third with 15 seats, while Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party, a fringe player in the 2009 contest, formed the majority government in the state. During an election rally in Jind, Modi had bowed his head before the influence of khaps and said they had done good service to society. It was seen as an attempt to lure the Jat voters.
More than 100 khap leaders gathered in Delhi on Wednesday said the khaps had vowed to bring the Hoodas back to power in 2019. The Rohtak MP said khap panchayats had stood by the party in every situation.
