The accused has been identified as Shriniwas Yadav, 38, a native of Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh.
The deceased has been identified as Ram Krishan, resident of Mandi Gobindgarh and a labourer by profession.

Police said Krishan was living separately from his family for the past eight years and had shifted to Chandigarh around four years ago.

They claimed that Yadav, who was also a labourer, revealed that Krishan had gone to his native place on September 9 to persuade his wife to start living with him, but she refused.

Krishan returned to Chandigarh on the same day and consumed liquor with Yadav first at SAS Nagar, then at Attawa and later at Sector 22. The duo reached Sector 20 rotary around 8:30pm where they again had liquor till around 10pm.

The police said there Krishan pressured Yadav to either help him convince his wife to start living with him or kill her. This led to a heated argument and a physical alteration ensued. In a fit of rage, Yadav hit Kirshan thrice with the stones lying at the spot, before fleeing the spot, the police claimed.

The accused will be produced in the court on Thursday.
