The inaugural Kargil courier service of Indian Air Force (IAF) was cancelled on Wednesday due to poor visibility and bad weather.

Official sources said traffic was not allowed on Srinagar- Kargil road this morning due to slippery road conditions and about minus ten degree celsius minimum temperature.

There was no possibility of improvement in the weather due to cloudy sky resulting in drop in the maximum temperature.

Taking in view the slippery road conditions and possibility of fresh snowfall on December 7 and 8, the divisional commissioner, Kashmir,Asgar Hassan Samoon has ordered closure of Srinagar- Kargil-Leh road for traffic from tomorrow till further orders.

The Border Roads Organisation (BRO), responsible for the maintenance of the road, had announced the closure of the Srinagar-Leh national highway between Sonmarg to Meenamarg from November 1.

However, as the weather remained dry, transport minister Qamar Ali Akhoon, who represents Kargil constituency, announced that the highway will remain open till November 15.

Officer on Special Duty (OSD) Aamir Ali in the office of divisional commissioner said that the inaugural IAF Kargil courier service between Srinagar and Kargil, which was to operate on Wednesday, has been cancelled due to bad weather.
