Stating that Panjab University (PU) seems to have lost its glory, Chandigarh's newly-elected Member of Parliament and university alumnus Kirron Kher on Saturday said that the university must strive hard to become the best educational institution in the country.
Kher was speaking at a function organised by the Panjab University Alumni Association (PUAA), at which 75 students of the 2012-13 batch who topped the university in various courses were awarded scholarships.
Former chief justice of the Allahabad high court Justice (retd) SS Sodhi was chief guest on the occasion.
Reminiscing about her days in the university, Kher said that she spent most the productive years of her life on the PU campus, adding that it was the university that made her what she was today.
She also said that she would do what she could as an MP to restore the university's lost glory.
Both Kirron and her husband anupam were given life memberships to PUAA.
Vice chancellor Arun Kumar Grover said PU was mulling over having corporate funding for scholarships to meritorious students. Speaking on the sidelines of the PUAA function, Grover said that very little was currently being offered as scholarships, instituted by university alumni, among others.
"I have done it in the past as well and it could be a brilliant idea to encourage students," he said, while talking to reporters. Earlier, speaking at the award function Kirron Kher had also suggested an increase in the scholarship amount given to students.
