A local court on Tuesday awarded 12-year sentence to a Jalandhar resident after holding him guilty in a nine-year-old dowry death case. The convict was identified as Charanbeer Singh, resident of Jalandhar in Punjab.
In April 2005, Davinderpreet Kaur, wife of Charanbeer Singh, committed suicide by hanging herself from ceiling fan.
Before committing the suicide, she wrote on the door holding her husband responsible of her death. The deceased's mother said in her complaint that Charanbeer demanded the dowry from her daughter as a result of which she took the extreme step.
The couple tied the knot in 1998 and after few years of their marriage their relationship soured.
She eventually left her in-laws house and started living with her mother in SAS Nagar. The deceased was survived by her daughter.
Even after when they started living separately, the convict allegedly harassed her for the dowry. Initially, the police had registered a case of abetment to suicide on the statement of the deceased's mother but the court later converted the case into section 304b (dowry death).
