Additional district & sessions judge Tarsem Mangla on Friday sentenced a Sector 91 resident, Jammun alias Rakesh, convicted of murdering his cousin's wife to life imprisonment.
The court also sentenced him to an additional ten years'in jail after holding him guilty of trespassing in a house, and both sentences will run concurrently. The court also slapped a fine of Rs 2,000.
The court relied on the dying declaration given by the victim to a magistrate to arrive at the judgment. The court had provided free legal advice to the convict after noting he could not afford a criminal defence lawyer.
The murder took place on May 2, 2013 when Jammun, who hails from Uttar Pradesh, went to the home of the deceased, Lajwanti, in Sector 91 when she was alone and set her afire by pouring diesel on her following a heated argument. After the police was informed she was taken to a nearby hospital and referred to PGI, where doctors declared her condition as being critical. Later, her family members took her to her hometown in UP where she died on May 13.
The police initially filed a case under sections 307 (attempted murder) & 450 (tresspassing) of the IPC, but after the victim's death the sections were amended to 302 (murder) &449 ("house trespass").
