A local court on Monday sentenced a man to life imprisonment for burning his wife to death.


According to information, Gurmeet Singh of Sihon Majra in Rupnagar had beaten up his wife Kuwinder Kaur on July 22, 2013 and set her on fire after sprinkling kerosene on her. She was taken to Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, where judicial magistrate Ashok Kumar had recorded her statement.

Police had arrested Gurmeet Singh on July 23, 2013 after registering a case under Section 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) at Singh-Bhagwantpur police station.

Later on Kulwinder Kaur succumbed to the injuries, after which Gurmeet was charged under Section 302 (murder) of the IPC.

After completion of the trial, Rupnagar sessions judge Amarjot Bhatti held the accused guilty and sentenced him to life imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on him.
