Showing concern to the victims of Uttarakhand tragedy, the Chandigarh municipal corporation (MC) announced Rs 1 crore for the disaster-hit state.
In the MC house meeting held on Friday, Congress councillor Gurbax Rawat introduced the agenda in this regard and all councillors shared their sentiments towards the families who were affected by the natural disaster.
The opposition councillors alleged that that the UT administration and municipal corporation failed to help the residents of Chandigarh who were stuck in Uttarakhand.
BJP councillor Davesh Moudgil said, “It is very unfortunate that when every state was making efforts to bring back its residents, Chandigarh did not make any efforts. They neither prepared any list nor started any helpline. Moreover, our local member Parliament Pawan Kumar Bansal did not take any initiative in this regard.”
Moudgil requested the mayor to form a disaster management cell, which could help the affected people during such havocs. Earlier, a two-minute silence was observed in the memory of victims of Uttarakhand.
BJP councillor Saurabh Joshi said, “It was the mayors' duty to talk to the UT administration for helping the victims.”
Miffed over the allegations from the opposition councillors, mayor Subhash Chawla said according to the Municipal Act, there was no provision for financial assistance to victims. He, however, announced Rs 1 crore for the Uttarakhand victims. He said a proposal would be sent to the administration for approval and hopefully by next week, it would be done.

He said local MP Bansal had given Rs 30 lakh from the MPLAD fund. Similarly, MC teams were sent to the ISBT-43 to provide drinking water and sanitation facilities on the request of Punjab government.
