The union has threatened not to call off the strike until their demands are met.

On Tuesday, the protesters gheraoed the garbage dumping ground in Dadumajra, and did not allow the garbage disposal vehicles to enter the plant till late evening. Speaking to HT, union president Krishan Kumar Chadha said, “The authorities had assured us that our demands would be fulfilled in January, but till now, nothing has been. Now, we will not call off our strike until they agree to our demands.”

Their main demands include regularisation of as many as 134 daily wagers tagged as daily wagers, a hike in their salary to `10,600, jobs to family members of the deceased workers and promotion of literate sanitation workers to the post of clerks.

Due to the strike, heaps of the garbage have started piling up on roads and outside the sehaj safai kendras. When contacted, Rajeev Gupta, joint commissioner, said, “Their demand of regularisation of 134 workers will be fulfilled soon. We had a meeting, and are hopeful it will be done soon.”

The company, Jaiprakash Associate Ltd, is running the plant in spite of heavy losses. Who will bear them?”
