The Haryana government drew up a contingency plan for farmers, on Thursday, as the situation looks grim with monsoon playing truant. The contingency plans chalked out by the government include alternate crops which does not require much water and new production technologies.
"At the moment, the situation looks pretty bad and if it does not rain over the next 2-3 days, it will make things worse. We have drawn up a contingency plan to deal with the situation," Haryana's Agriculture Minister HS Chatha said.
Though the Met Department predicts that it would rain over this weekend, the minister said farmers should take care of the paddy crop that they have already sown rather than go for new crop that would require more water.
Under the plan, that was decided after a meeting of field officers of the Haryana's Agriculture Department in Chandigarh, the state has been divided into two zones which include north and eastern zones of the state and an awareness campaign would be shortly launched for the implementation of the plan.
The plan also aims at minimizing crop waste in the case of deficient rains by educating farmers.
