The Bharatiya Janata Party MP from Bhiwani, Dharambir Singh is known for his political maneuvering. The Congress deserter jumped on the BJP bandwagon just at the right juncture — before the Lok Sabha polls — and even managed to get a saffron party ticket.
Singh’s maneuvering skills are once again on display. After his brother, Rajbir Singh Lala was denied a BJP nomination from Tosham assembly seat, the latter, on Saturday, filed his nomination papers as the BJP’s covering candidate as well as an Independent. The official BJP candidate from Tosham is Gunpal Singh, also a Dharambir loyalist.
Interestingly, Rajbir Singh Lala’s wife, Kusum Lata, too, has filed nomination papers from Tosham as a covering candidate for the official BJP nominee Gunpal Singh.
Sources said since the BJP refused to give party tickets to the kin of sitting MPs and MLAs, Dharambir managed to seek a ticket for his loyalist Gunpal Singh who had also joined the saffron party during Lok Sabha polls along with the former.
Leaders close to the BJP MP confided that Dharambir was now adamant on fielding his brother Lala from Tosham. “Lala’s filing nomination as an Independent and as BJP covering candidate is a pressure tactic by Dharambir to get the official BJP candidate substituted,” said a party insider.
Dharambir is also learnt to be negotiating with the saffron party to field Lala’s wife Kusum Lata to make it an all-women contest against sitting Congress MLA from Tosham, Kiran Choudhry and INLD candidate Kamla Devi.
When asked as to how he has filed nomination papers as a BJP covering candidate and an Independent as well, Rajbir Singh Lala refused to comment.
BJP co-incharge for Haryana, Anil Jain told HT that they were persuading Dharambir Singh to withdraw his brother’s nomination as an Independent candidate from Tosham.
