Multi-toned horns: defaulters to face action

A month after the Supreme Court directed that all unauthorised multi-toned horns be removed from vehicles across the country, the Punjab government has told commissioners of police and senior superintendents of police (SSPs) to initiate action against erring individuals.

The additional director general of police (ADGP), law and order and traffic, Dinkar Gupta, said as per the directive, issued in compliance with the Supreme Court order of December 10, 2013, the police had been told to take strict action against drivers, which even includes cancellation of driving licences, of those who fail to comply.

The apex court, in its order, has directed that all such horns, other than those which have been allowed under 119 (3) of the Central Motor Vehicle Rules or such other rules framed by the administration, be removed by January 10.

Gupta also added that only vehicles belonging to the police, the fire brigades and ambulances were permitted to use multi-toned horns in the course of their duty.
