NHRC notice to Karnataka jail authorities

The National Human Rights Commission (NRHC) on Thursday issued notices to the prison authorities of Karnataka over allegations of non-release of prisoners even after the completion of their sentence. The notices were served to the director general (prisons), Karnataka, and the superintendent, Gulbarga jail, asking them to submit reports within 15 days in the case, an NHRC statement said.

The notices were issued after the commission took cognisance of complaints which said that some prisoners had not been released from the Gulbarga jail even after completing their sentence for 14 years. These prisoners include Gurdeep Singh, whose release has been demanded by Gurbaksh Singh Khalsa.
