The building, reportedly built around 1977, had violations of safety norms. A senior officer told HT: “There were a number of wooden cabins built within the structure. Even iron grilles were set up which blocked the way of the firefighters.”

This was not unique. In a survey conducted by the National Disaster Management Authority last year, it was found that majority of government buildings in Sector 17 were hazardous as passages and verandahs were filled with dumped files and furniture.

The NIELIT was not issued any notice, said sources at the UT estate office.
