Four months after HT brought the issue of research fraud to the fore in the pharmacology department in the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), the director has failed to initiate even an inquiry into the matter.
Soon after the reports were published, the director sent clippings of these news reports (July 28 and July 30) to the pharmacology department head and sought relevant record and according to information available with HT, the documents provided by the department to the director corroborated HT’s reports.
In two reports on July 28 and 30, HT had highlighted that how the Drug Information Unit (DIU) at the PGIMER, run by the pharmacology department, received just one call in three years from 2011 to 2013, but three doctors from the pharmacology department, including the head Dr Amitava Chakravarti published a paper research in peer-reviewed journal claiming that the unit received 56 calls in one month.
After the issue was brought to light, the Journal retracted the paper.
When HT contacted the office of Dr YK Chawla, it was asked to send written queries. In spite of sending detailed written queries, there has been no response from the director or his staff.
