In spite of bringing the issue to the notice of authorities several times, the stray-dog menace continues unabated on the campus of Punjab Agricultural University (PAU).
All the efforts seem to have proved futile as even after repeated media reports and students’ demands, no concrete action has been taken by the university authorities to keep a check on the growing number of stray dogs.
It may be recalled that HT had carried out a report, “PAU turns blind eye to rising stray dogs menace”, on April 5 this year, but it seems, the officials concerned have preferred to evince their lackadaisical attitude towards the major problem.
In the report, it was highlighted that a female dog had given birth to as many as eight puppies in front of the Students Home. Students had asked the authorities to take immediate action and send them to kennels.
However, during a visit to the university campus on Wednesday, the students narrated the same old story. Gurpreet Singh, a university student, said stray dogs could be spotted at every nook and cranny of the campus, including canteens, parks, and even the reading room of the library.
“Exams are on, and sometimes, to study in groups, we prefer to study in the parks or in the reading room of the library, but it’s hard to concentrate when stray dogs are roaming around you. The officials are well aware about the scenario, but, are least bothered,” added Singh.

{{/usCountry}}Another student Jaspreet Singh said, “The situation is so bad that many a times, if we keep the doors open, stray dogs enter in our hostel rooms. The authorities must take immediate steps to stop the stray dog menace.”
Another group of students, seeking anonymity, expressed that the university authorities were highly languid in attitude. “They should not wait for some incident to happen and take immediate step to curb the increasing population of stray dogs on the campus,” they said.
PAU estate officer JS Mahal could not be contacted despite several attempts.
