UT deputy commissioner-cum-returning officer Mohammed Shayin has issued a show-cause notice to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for alleged violation of the model code of conduct by its prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi and Aarti Mehra, a general secretary, and in charge of party affairs of Chandigarh, during a rally held in Sector 34 on March 29.
Chandigarh Territorial Congress Committee vicepresident DD Jindal had complained that Modi had delivered a speech that had used false, defamatory and uncalled for language against Congress candidate Pawan Bansal.
The complaint states that Modi had allegedly said: “Bharasthachar ke Pawan ko yahi par gaad do. Use jaane mat do. Yahin per rokdo ( roughly translated this reads... The winds of corruption must be stopped here. Let it not flow. Stop it here).”
During the same rally, Mehra, has been accused for insulting the Father of the Nation ‘ Mahatma Gandhi’. As per the complaint, Mehra allegedly said: “Majboori ka naam Mahatma Gandhi (The trapped is the Mahatma Gandhi) while addressing the gathering.
Election Commission of India guidelines mandated that candidates should refrain from making personal comments or else action would be initiated. The RO added that an explanation from the party has been demanded in three days.

Election Commission of India mandates: “No person shall print or publish, or cause to be printed or published, any election pamphlet or poster which does not bear on its face the name and address of the printer and the publisher thereof.”
There are other conditions to be taken care of in the order, but a violation of the above conditions, shall be punishable with imprisonment for a term which may extend to six months or with fine which may extend to Rs 2,000 or with both.
The party has als0 been given three days to explain its position.
