Prime Minister Narendra Modi has urged doctors not to leave the country for greener pastures and instead serve “your own people”, saying the society had played a great role in helping them achieve their dreams.
“So many people, from a ward-boy to a tea-seller, help in making a doctor. Instead of going abroad, you should serve your own people,” Modi said while presiding over a convocation ceremony at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) in Chandigarh.
Modi reminded the audience that the convocation coincided with the anniversary of the September 11 bombings of the twin towers in the US.
“On 9/11 PGI is producing doctors who will save lives… (otherwise) it is a day remembered for an attempt to destroy lives,” Modi said.
Education, however, doesn’t come to end at the convocation, Modi added, and told young doctors to focus on wellness instead of addressing illnesses. "The society wants freedom from medicines,” he said.

Calling the students, who live in the city’s slums, the “chief guests”, Modi said taking part in the convocation and seeing people being felicitated will inspire them to “become something in life”.
