The UT education department’s move to conduct online admissions in all government colleges in the city has been received enthusiastically by students. The department, which had begun the process on June 7, has so far received a total of 2,813 applications, with Post Graduate Government College, Sector 11, getting the biggest number at over 802.
Among the others, Government College for Girls, Sector 11, has received over 734 applications, GCG-42 - 606 and Government College for Commerce and Business Administration -194 with Government College-46 getting 476 applications.
The move undoubtedly has saved students from the hassle of lining up at colleges to buy and submit application forms.
Commenting on making the process online, UT higher education director Sandeep Hans said, “We took the initiative to simplify the admission process. So far we’ve received a good response and the new process has benefited both local as well as out-of-town students who can now apply with just a click.”
Education department officials said the largest number of applications had been received for BA, followed by BSc (computer science) and BSc (non-medical) programmes. They added though they had not sorted the applications it appears these courses were the most popular.
“As most colleges have about 800 seats for BA there is usually no shortage of seats for this course. The real competition is for BSc (computer science), commerce and BSc (nonmedical) courses as colleges have limited seats. We’re yet to get the final figures on applications filed for each course,” said a department official handling online submission of forms.

{{/usCountry}}Commerce is yet another popular stream and the centralised admission process for the course is being handled by PU. The university has received over 7,000 applications for a total of 2,100 seats.
