Prime Minister David Cameron on Wednesday called Operation Bluestar and the events that followed it in India in 1984 a "stain on the post-independence history of India", and said Britain should celebrate the contribution Sikhs make to his country.
Responding to a question in the House of Commons during Prime Minister's Question Time, Cameron said, "What happened in Amritsar 30 years ago led to a tragic loss of life," which remained a "deep source of pain to Sikhs everywhere".
Asked what more could be done to bring someone to justice "for the appalling events" that followed Operation Bluestar across India, Cameron said, "We cannot interfere in the Indian justice system and nor should we."
"I think the most important thing that we can do in this country is to celebrate the immense contribution British Sikhs make to our country, our armed forces, our culture and our business life," he said.
