Over Rs 7 lakh collected for traffic violations in August

Taking stringent action against the traffic offenders, the SAS Nagar police have collected Rs 7 lakhs as fine for violations in the month of August alone.

Taking stringent action against the traffic offenders, the SAS Nagar police have collected Rs 7 lakhs as fine for violations in the month of August alone.

Superintendent of police (traffic) Savinder Jit Singh Bains stated that the police had issued 2,280 challans in a spot collection drive launched to curb traffic violations and collected Rs 7, 91,800.

The officer said the drive, was launched in the beginning of this year and was initiated for the convenience of commuters so they can choose to pay penalty on the spot of the offence.

The amount collected is handed in by the officer of duty at the end of the day. Police sources said that August collections were the highest so far.

At 517, Lalru area saw the highest number of challans being issued, while the police had issued 571 challans in the three zones in the city limits.

Riding two-wheelers without helmets was on top of the list of violations, with as many as 779 challans issued for the offence.

Meanwhile, the traffic police have sent 2,138 challans of those who opted not to pay fine on the spot to the district transport officer (DTO) for further penalty.

Moreover, the traffic police have not issued a single challan for misbehaving, smoking while driving, extra voice of silencer, unauthorised red bacon and wrong crossing in August.

Interestingly, of the offenders whose challans were sent for further penalty, 878 were of SAS Nagar residents.
