UT vigilance department arrested an attendant of paid parking lot in Sector 22 B (in front of Sector 17 ISBT) for overcharging from a commuter, on Monday.

Acting on a complaint, the Chandigarh vigilance department sleuths laid a trap and found that attendant Ram Singh was fleecing visitors by charging rs 5 instead of Rs 2 from two-wheeler owners. A case has been registered under Prevention of Corruption Act against him.

The municipal corporation (MC) had allotted the parking contract to a private contractor, Malkit Singh, around seven days back for Rs 38 lakh.

SSP (vigilance) Manish Chaudhary said, "We will probe the role of contractor and MC official concerned for overcharging. There are around 1,000 vehicles that visit the parking lot every day, which implies that the contractor is earning rs 90,000 per month by overcharging."

Speaking to HT, the contractor said, "I am not aware of any overcharging as I was out of town. I have issued strict instructions to all my attendants not to overcharge."

On July 31, UT vigilance department, in its report pertaining to overcharging by parking contractor outside Elante mall, had recommended a departmental action against four civic body officials, including the additional commissioner, for a number of lapses. However, no action has been recommended against the contractor in the report.

The parking contractor at Sector 9-D was also found overcharging on Saturday by charging `10 instead of `5 for four-wheelers. Attendant Ravinder Singh asked the commuter Gopal Krishan to pay `10. When he resisted, he said, "You just pay Rs 5".

Contractor of Sector 9-D parking lot Sunil Kumar said, "I have already fired so many attendants for overcharging. I will check on this too."
