The Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) administration on Tuesday relocated the ‘langar’ site from the main gate due to “hygienic reasons”.

Now these ‘langar’ organisers have been given a space near the Panjab University (PU) gate and the PGIMER roundabout. According to PGIMER sources, the administration decided to relocate the ‘langar’ organisers due to cosmetic and hygienic reasons. The officials said following the ‘langar’, often a large amount of junk was left behind, which remained a headache for the administration to get it cleaned.

However, those who serve the ‘langar’ have opposed the move. “Thousands of people from all sections of the society visit the PGIMER every day. At the entrance gates, people were easily able to identify the ‘langar’. But with the new place allocated to us, it will be difficult to identify by the new patients,” said Jagdish Lal Ahuja, a renowned philanthropist.

He added change in the location was not a solution as people would suffer due to this.

In all, there are two most popular ‘langars’ that are held in the afternoon — one by Gurdwara Jhanda Sahib, Kurali, which serves around 700 people every day and the other by renowned philanthropist Jagdish Lal Ahuja, which serves nearly 1,400 people. Apart from that, many occasional ‘langars’ are also held.

Manju Wadwalkar, official spokesperson of the PGIMER, was not available for comments.
