PGI to organise competition to promote organ donation

To generate awareness on organ donation among people, the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) will org anise a poster-making competition on “Organ Donation ” theme on ‘ World Org an Donation Day’ at the Bhargava Auditorium, PGIMER, Chandigarh, on August 6.

According to a PGIMER press release, the contest will be conducted by the de par tment of hepatology, PGIMER, Chandigarh.

The contest is open for everyone and the winners will be given for cash prizes ranging from 5,000 to 20,000.

A group of experts will evaluate the posters and it will also be exhibited at the Zakir Hall on the same day. Detailed information is available at PGI website (and on www.lampoflife.in).

The last date for the submission of application for the postermaking competition is July 15.

According to experts, a huge gap exists between patients who need organs and potential organ donors.

“It’s not that there aren’ t enough organs to transplant. Nearly every person who dies naturally, or in an accident, is a potential organ donor. Even so, innumerable patients cannot find a donor. Rough estimates indicate that anywhere between t wo a nd three million Indians may have died in the last couple of years because they could not get an organ transplant. One person can save the life of about 8-10 persons; hence organ donation is considered to be a true ‘Gift of Life’,” said an expert from PGIMER.
