The worst spot in the area is the open drain from where roadside meat sellers conduct business. The drain is filled with filth and debris. Sweepers also collect domestic waste from the area and dump it in this drain. This attracts eagles and stray cattle.

The road housing the Berkeley showroom which borders Punjab’s Zirakpur is dotted by garbage dumps.
However, the civic body seems indifferent to the mess.

Seema, who runs a roadside tea shop, says, “Men come and urinate here. These garbage piles have been increasing in size.”

Even the garbage cans placed by the civic body are overflowing with filth.

Councillor Ravi Kant Swami who represents Industrial Area Phase 1 is on the run to evade arrest in a criminal case. He could not be contacted for comments.

The situation is similar in Phase 2 as well. Vacant plots in the area have been turned into dumping yards by owners of other plots.

The area near plot 14 is filled with garbage. There are heaps of waste, debris, and wild overgrowth behind plot 254. Plot 302 also suffers the same fate. Obsolete machinery also lie discarded on some of these plots.

Sunil Talwar, deputy mayor and councillor of Industrial Area Phase 2, conceded that cleanliness was an area of concern.

“We have got the area cleaned many times. But it keeps getting dirtier. On December 2, 3, we will pool in all our resources to the get the place cleaned as part of the Swachh Bharat campaign.
