A team led by assistant superintendent of police (ASP) Kuldeep Singh Chahal had been following Shera, a native of Khuban in Fazilka district, since afternoon, after secret information that he was moving in his Toyota Fortuner along with his wife.

Apparently unaware that he was being followed, he drove to his residence in the 'posh' Kamla Nehru Colony around 7pm. Police claimed that he fired first when he noticed cops on his trail, and the police shot him in the encounter that ensued. No injuries were reported from the police side. "While Shera was injured and is in hospital, his wife did not suffer any injury. But there were at least two mores persons at his house who managed to escape," said deputy inspector general (DIG) Pramod Baan.
