President to deliver convocation address at PU

President Pranab Mukherjee will visit Panjab University (PU) to deliver convocation address during the 64th annual convocation at the university on March 14.

President Pranab Mukherjee will visit Panjab University (PU) to deliver convocation address during the 64th annual convocation at the university on March 14.

Mukherjee will be the fifth President to deliver the convocation address at the university. Earlier, APJ Abdul Kalam, Giani Zail Singh, Neelam Sanjiva Reddy and Rajinder Prasad had delivered convocation address in 2007, 1985, 1981 and 1951, respectively.

On the occasion of the convocation, medals, prizes and degrees will be awarded to students.

Pranab Mukherjee had earlier delivered convocation address at the PU convocation in March 2010 as the union finance minister and addressed 45th annual convocation as deputy chairman, Planning Commission and union minister of commerce on February 26, 1995.

Nobel Prize winner in Chemistry (2009) Venkatraman Ramakrishnan; field medal winner (2014) and noted mathematician Manjul Bhargava; and renowned agricultural scientist and recipient of Padma Vibhushan MS Swaminathan are likely to be bestowed the honorary degrees of doctor of science (Honoris Causa) by the PU.

Noble Peace Prize laureate (2014) and children rights activist Kailash Satyarthi is also likely to be given honorary degree of doctor of laws (Honoris Causa).
