As the admission season is on, city private colleges are making huge money by just selling out their prospectus. A student applying for two or more colleges has to shell out anywhere from Rs 1,200 to Rs 1,500.
The exorbitant fee charged by the private colleges is against the norms laid down by the University grants commission (UGC) that says that the cost of prospectus cannot be more than its printing cost.
While both Panjab University (PU) and UT administration have tried to put a cap on the admission fee by making many of the admissions centralised with a common fee, the colleges are earning as much as they can through the sale of prospectus.
The websites of most private colleges in the city are updated with all facts and information to attract student's attention, but none of them has the option for downloading the admission form free of cost.
The colleges, besides listing the courses available with them and the kind of facilities they provide, also mention that they would be sending the prospectus by post on payment of a certain amount. This shows the efforts being put by the colleges to earn money through sale of prospectus.
The PU authorities can control the colleges and take action against them for selling prospectus at huge costs, but are waiting for a complaint. A senior official from PU said, “We haven't received any complaint against high cost of prospectus by colleges. The higher authorities can decide on some action.”
