Britain’s regulator of charity organisations has opened an inquiry into alleged immigration-related irregularities in the functioning of the Manchester-based Khalsa Missionary Society, which aims to help the Sikh community here.
The Charity Commission, the independent regulator of charities, said on Wednesday that the inquiry had been opened as a result of an ongoing investigation by the Home office into suspected immigration abuse.
The commission’s inquiry will also examine issues such as whether the society was set up and registered with the commission for an improper purpose and/or operating for the public benefit, or if it had been used for a non-charitable purpose.
It will also examine whether the trustees had personally benefited from charitable funds in breach of trust; if they misapplied charitable funds for an improper purpose; and if they complied with and fulfilled their duties and responsibilities as charity trustees in the proper administration of the society.
